These Michigan Fall Family Portraits were photographed in Petoskey, Michigan. The fall time in Northern Michigan is a spectacular time of year! The vibrant colors light up the landscape making for a truly unique backdrop.
I have had the pleasure of knowing Brittney & Donn since 2012 when I photographed their wedding in Boyne Falls, Michigan. Since then they have had 2 sons.
I met with the Vidosh family in a wide open field area along Horton Bay Road. We timed this photoshoot perfectly to align with the vibrant, fall trees in the background. The overcast weather created a great diffuser casting even light for the entire photoshoot. Cloudy or overcast days aren’t always a bad thing! The field had some mowed pathways that I had the family walk down. We then captured a mixture of portraits and candids with the entire family and other groupings. I like to make sure that there is a variety of images during every photoshoot.
When planning a family photoshoot we like to encourage our clients to choose a location that is meaningful to them. We also have many suggestions in mind if you need any help deciding. Below you can read more tips about planning for your own family portrait session!
Portrait Session Tips
- It is best to schedule your portrait session in the morning or evening for the best lighting.
- We find that neutral outfits are best. Neutrals display well in any room and keep the focus on your family members rather than the clothes.
- If kids will be at your photoshoot we suggest bringing some “clean” snacks. Nothing messy that would cause kids mouths, hands, or outfits to get stained.
